Subject: Diazoxide & Insulinoma
Hi,
Well, my pharmacist compounds mine in chicken flavor and then
I put it in chicken baby food and they eat it right up. I also
have mixed it with ferretone and have had success. Also, I
just wanted to comment on giving an insulinomic ferret sugar -
don't. It's not good for them and can stimulate the pancreas
to output more insulin which is definitely what you don't
want. While trying to get important meds into the fert you
don't want to complicate the problem by giving sugar -
raisins, karo syrup (only for emergency seizure), bananas, or
any other fruit or form of sugar. Again, my best methods are
to compound in chicken flavor, but even when that's not
available, Ferretone and chicken baby food have worked OK.
I don't think it's quite time to give up yet unless he seems
in pain or you *know* that his quality of life is really poor.
I understand the frustration at giving so many meds and
vigilantly caring for their needs. It can become tiresome for
both you and the fert and I, personally, get angry at the
world at times when they fight me and I'm just trying to do
what's best for them. I've sat and cried in frustration, just
getting so angry that it couldn't just go smoothly. The worst
part for me with the insulinoma is that I know that it won't
end until they're gone. It's hard when you know that they
won't ever be well again. But then I look down into their eyes
and see that cute little face looking back at me and realize
that I have to be strong and give them the most love I can
even if I'm emotionally tapped out. Their time is way too
short.
I'm not really sure if the above venting helps you, but I just
had to put it out there because when Icabod was at his worst,
those thoughts crossed my mind on whether he was still
enjoying life, because I wasn't and if it was this bad for me,
he must be having a worse time of it. My boyfriend, whom can
always be objective, told me that I was mostly projecting my
despair onto Icabod's actions and that from an objective point
of view he was pretty happy and comfortable. Yea, he didn't
like having his bladder expressed or taking yucky meds, but
those were only short times in days filled with snuggling,
chewing up a chewweasle or making his way slowly through a
tube.
My warmest regards and thoughts to you and your baby,
Stephanie
with Maggie, Bullwinkle, Shasta, Nanook and Nyla
missing with all my heart Icabod and Emeline

It's my Zackari again, an almost 8 year old double adrenal
cancer
surgery large spleen and all the rest.
Any suggestions how to get the medication Diazoxide down
him. It
tastes terrible and we've tried tutee fruited and banana.
I've
mixed karo and raisins and water. It worked once but he is
refusing
to take his medication. I think he's getting tired of the
whole
thing. I just don't know if I should just let him go over
the
rainbow bridge.
Huges to all those fuzzies out there.
