Subject: Diabetic Ferret

One of our ferrets was recently diagnosed with Diabetes. I
understand this is very rare in ferrets, especially if they haven't
had insolinoma. I was wondering if there are any vets out there
familiar with the treatment of diabetes in ferrets. Or if anybody
has information I can give to our vet that will help with his
treatment.

I was going to try to write a little thing on what his treatment
history has been, but to much of it is fuzy and vague for me to do it
justice. If need be I can talk to the vet treating Sandy and get the
details. So far we have tried insulin but it doesn't seem to be
regulating him correctly and are also having a hard time finding the
correct dilutin (apparently sterile water isn't a good dilutent). At
this point we are trying Lipizide (sp), but he was just started on
this and it is a little too early to tell.

Our vet seems to be doing everything she can to treat Sandy but she
is having a hard time finding any information about the treatment of
diabetes in domestic ferrets and I would like to make as much
information available to her as possible.

Thanks
Dan
