Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Scabbing question

Hi..

I'm not a vet but my littlest old lady gets mast cell tumours that look like a sore and bleed.. the vet has removed 3 of them so far in the last 3 years.. i'd keep an eye on it and if it doesn't heal and go away.. it may just be one of these annoying tumours.. Cassie's haven't been cancerous or invasive though she has had them on her muzzle under her neck and when she first came to us she had a quarter size oozing hideous thing on her neck..

good luck with your little one..

Sandy

Hi everyone,
I haven't really had much free time lately and I hate to post somethign that has been covered, but I feel like this might be something new. My oldest ferret Winnie, who just turned 5, has insulinomia and an adrenal tumor. She is doing well now (bald, but happy) and her insulinomia seems to be doing well with just .5cc pediapred and a jar of baby food 2x day.
Here is her problem though. About a month ago when I was cleaning the cage i saw a few drops of blood near the food dish. I cleaned it up not thinking too much of it (it really was just a few tiny drops), but wanted to know who it came from. Winnie was next to me so I looked at her first....and found the culprit. It seems as if she got just one toe caught in something - she had a HUGE blod clott on one toe, but cause the neighhbor toe to stick to it. IT did not bother her at all. I called my two college roomates who are both vet techs for advice (I tend to panic - they tend not too!) Anyway, one of them lives really close so she from what I told her decided winnie was fine till the morning anyway and I did not need to rush to an emergency vet. She came over the next day and was sort of shocked - she assumed I was overreacting to the size - but I wasn't. Anyway, we cleaned it with poroxide really well - her pad on that toe is a little black and blue and swollen - but not that bad. I clean it everyday and put some baccatracin on as well as a precaution. IT is much smaller - but there is still a clot about the size of the a little toe pad. There is still some swelling - not as much - and some black and blue - the rest of that pad is pink. It doesn't bother her - just me. I clean it often and it is not infected - it honestly looks like it was a blood blister from maybe her getting her toe caught and then it broke and bled, formed a big clott adn stopped.
How long should I put up with this clot? Like I said - she doesn't not know it is there - I keep it really clean. Shoul I be taking her to a vet to maybe cut it off or something - as gross as that sounds - or do I just give it more time to fall off on its own.
Thanks for reading and for any help you may have.
