Subject: Dr. Williams: more on low protein diets

Hi Dr. Williams,
Yes, your response was most definately helpful. for
qualifying and elaborating on the role of phosphorus
in renal damange in the face of kidney failure. I
start my pathology rotation in a few weeks so I"ll be
one up on at least one pathophysiologic mechanism
<grin>.(thanks :) )
I am left with one question. Is phosphorus the
only component of protein that causes problems for
kidneys in renal failure, or are there other
components of the protein that are damanging?
From the personal (perhaps this makes it two
questions <smile>). Mighty Mouse has one kidney and is
in kidney failure. We have normalized her phosphorus
levels with amphojel which I give at the same time she
gets baby food. Is there any benefit now (given the
normal phosphorus levels), in trying to switch her to
a "lower" protein diet (less baby food, senior ferret
food, etc.)?

I am indebted for all your answers to all my questions
(and others') that come with such detail yet such
simplicity :) Thank you,
