Subject: Mighty Mouse; Update: great news

Well,
Great news on Mighty Mouse. Her bilirubin while
high was accidentally retested the next morning and
was found to be even higher. The most likely
explanation for this is that the blood hemolyzed
overnight. The first sample that had a high bilirubin
had sat for hours (it was run as an 'add on' to the
renal panel), so perhaps that had hemolyzed too. We
tested her urine and she had no bilirubin in her
urine. She is not bruising today, and she is still
acting healthy. I can't recall if I mentioned this in
my last post but her liver values are back to normal,
her lungs are clear (and she's been off lasix for 2
weeks), and her potassium and phosphorus levels that
had been rising, are normal again! Her BUN, and
Creatinine are static (~70, and 3.2, with SG of 1.020
average), and she's (amazingly) not symptomatic ...
...for anything. So, for now, I count my blessings.
:)
From those who have written to me of their
experience with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia
(auto-immune hemolytic anemia, IHA, IMHA, etc.), I
gather for ferrets ,it is a rapidly progressive and
lethal condition (or *can* be). My heart goes out to
all of you who have lost ferrets in such a horrible
way (and to all of you who have lost ferrets in any
way). Been there..done that..sigh. These guys steal
our hearts in ways only we understand.

Hugs and ferret kisses,
