Subject: Re: Adrenal Surgery

<The vet gave amoxi-drops and prednisone. But he
said the prednisone should only be
used if he appears to be weak. I was under the
impression before surgery
that he'd be on constant medication for life. <

Cedes recently had a bilateral adrenalectomy. He
was put on pred for about 5 weeks after the
surgery. About 4-5 days after surgery, his
electrolytes were tested. About a week after the
pred was finished, they were tested again. That's
how the vet can tell whether they need to be on
lifelong meds. And, that's about as scientific as
I can get <g>.

I believe Dr. Karen recommended testing just a few
days after surgery to ward off a possible
Addison's crisis.
