Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: Addison's in ferrets?

The practice of removing the left if unsure has bothered me
too. One of my ferrets, Hemingway, my vet went into to
perform adrenal gland surgeryon. When he went in he felt that
it was the right, but it was such a minimal difference. I was
there while he was doing the surgery and I could tell that he
was not feeeling comfortable removing the gland. We ended up
biopsing the right one, and I was so glad. It meant two
surgeries, but if he had automatically removed the left,
Hemingway would have had ongoing problems. Instead he was
cured as my vet was able to get all of the tumor. He was only
a year old at the time.
Take care,
Steph

My vet totally agrees with yours. He does not
believe in removing things because of possible
problems down the road. I once asked him about
the practice when you go in and can't see anything
wrong with either adrenal, always remove the
left. He doesn't agree with this at all. I
think your vet is giving you good advice.

Like Sukie, I haven't heard of more than one vet
who routinely practices this.
