Subject: Spike :-(

Hello

Spike's time came tonight, he started bleeding from his eye (badly) so we
rushed him to the vets. My 2 favourite vets weren't on call but the
emergency vet was at least somebody I liked and somebody who was good. We
talked for a while, I think the bleeding even stopped but Spike didn't look
good. He was in pain and if we'd kept him alive and maybe even tried
steroids, it would have only prolonged his suffering and the inevitable. So
it was agreed to put him to sleep. My husband watched the post mortem while
I waited in the waiting room but curiosity got the better of me so I went
inand looked at Spike. Seems I'm not that squeamish anymore... There
wasn't one lump in his chest, 3 were about the size of a pea and the other 2
the size of 3 peas and one or more were by the anterior (?) vena cava and
would have restricted the blood flow. The tumours were between the artery
that goes to the head and the vena cava and there was a nerve running
through the tumours. So the tumours were attached to both the artery and
the vein. There wasn't much room left for the lungs according to the vet.

It was very interesting to have a look inside, the lungs were nothing like I
would have imagined and now I know what a ferret looks like inside. Spike
also had a lump on his stomach, the vet said probably a lymph node.

Nothing could have prepared me for that, I had no idea that this was
possible that he'd start bleeding from the eye, he came out of bed and
started sneezing and blood spluttered all over... I was okay at the vets
and detached myself from everything but on the way back home it caught up
with me...

I have sent pictures to Dr Williams, if he thinks they're good or if anybody
is interested, I will put them into the medical folder on the web site...
