Subject: Re: Phenothrin

D-Phenothrin is the active ingredient in Hartz Flea Drops. It is a
synthetic pyrethrin. Cats are very sensitive to pyrethrins and some
cats will react even to this synthetic ingredient. D-phenothrin can
cause skin irritation, seizures, and even death in sensitive cats.
I, personally, would not use Hartz on my cats much less the ferrets.
Over-the-counter flea products are not nearly as safe as Advantage or
Frontline. The safety of my pets makes the extra cost worthwhile.
There are several articles in the archives about using Frontline or
Advantage for flea control.

Is phenothrin (in Hartz flea drops for cats) harmful to ferrets? If
not, do I use the whole tube in one application or just part of it?
My vet isn't very knowledgeable about ferrets. Thank you!
