Subject: Brutus/Diabetes/Insulin resistance
Just an update on Brutus for those who have expressed an interest. We are up
to 5 Units of Pork NPH twice a day. We switched from Humulin NPH in hopes of
a better response. At 5 units we are running with blood glucose levels
essentially the same as at 1 Unit...300-400 dl/ml. He's also been getting
1/2 tsp brewer's yeast twice daily. And no sweet treats except a small slice
of banana daily because his potassium was a bit low. He's been off pred for
2 weeks.
I have read of a ferret that required up to 10 units twice daily, but that
sure seems like a lot.
I am still hoping/praying for a spontaneous return of blood glucose to lower
levels. Research in the archives suggests that this happens at least
occasionally.
Poor old Bru has been through so much...bilateral adrenal surgery, pancreatic
surgery, ECE, the loss of his friend Cleo, ear canal tumor. I am afraid that
I may be being unrealistic/unreasonable in continuing to try to keep him with
me. I know a lot of you have been through the torture of doubt about what is
best/fair/right to do.
Thanks for letting me vent a little.
