Subject: Anemia???
My ferret vet is on vacation, the one I work with has
no knowledge, so I did a bunch of diagnostics on my
own. Coco, my 2 year old albino has been lethargic,
stools a little off, his appetite had been fine. But
he just has not been playing with anyone. I did a
fecal and a UA, RBC+++
Protein+
Bilirubin++
Protein
Leukocytes
SG 1.018
PH 5
So I figure I may be dealing with a UTI. I pulled
enough blood to do a PCV,B.U.N and BG, and check his
white blood cell count. BUN was normal, WBC were
within normal limits. PCV was 25 and BG was 181. I
refered to my books and it says that albinos norms are
different and that the BG was actually normal, the PCV
however was in the gaurded range. I fasted him for 4
hours repeated the bloodwork the PCV dropped to 15 and
Blood glucose rose to 284. I had brought along one of
my other ferrets for comparison testing, his pcv was
in the 70's and BG was 114.
I don"t understand why his BG rose after a 4 our fast.
I figure he has a UTI secondary to anemia. I am
treating him for the UTI with amoxi, and treating the
anemia with Lixatinic. he is stable so I didn't think
a transfusion was needed. What scares me is that I can
treat the anemia, but if I don't know its cause, it
may just come back or not go away. I am going to
repeat the test on Wednesday. I am going to pull
enough blood for a Profile...but I am impatient, what
do you think it could be? I worry about cancer on his
kidneys..but his Bilirubin was 2++, which could be
liver related..right?
3 days into treatment and he is walking around the
house which is better than sleeping 24/7. But by no
means is he acting like a normal ferret. While I had
some of the ferrets at the clinic with me I did a
fecal and I found 2 ufos (unidentified floating
objects) from different samples, They looked just like
coccidia, I will retest on Monday, BUT could Coccidia
cause any of these things I have mentioned. Sorry for
the length, I have lost 5 ferrets in less than 2 years
and I am a little spooked.
