Subject: Re: coenzyme q10

Have no studies to quote, but in conjunction with her heart meds this
seemed to improve 'Chopper the Organic Helicopter's last months. She
had some real quality life in there despite her cardiomyopathy and
that is what counts.

The one of our's who did the best with cardiomyopathy for over a year
was Meltdown. Her's was dilative -- the more common form -- but she
also had ventricular bigemini and was expected to succumb quickly.
What kept her going so well was careful (stress careful) use of
Digoxin. There are a lot of heart meds out there and I've even read
of folks whose ferrets had quality of life added with oxygen given or
meds to ease breathing, as well as the usual Enacard, Lasix, etc.
Suit the med to the ferret...

Anyway, our vet had us try it because a cardiologist was having the
vet use it on the cardiologist's dog along with meds and the vet was
positively impressed; we were as well with our little girl. Can't
recall dose; sorry.

I'm thinking about using coenzyme q10 for Cokie's hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy. I've heard of cats with this condition having some
success. Although I usually don't go much for this kind of
supplementation, this one seems to have "science" behind it somewhat.
(Although I haven't actually, um, read the studies, there seems to be
positive info out there.) Anyone have any experience with this
stuff? And I wonder what dose? I'm thinking 1-5 mg, but this is
partly a guess. (One of the aforementioned cats received 10 mg twice
daily...)

Inquisitive as always,
Celia
