In my experience, ferrets will typically start biting the hair off
their tails when stressed. I have anectodally heard of some that
lost all their fur due to stress, but consider it a pretty infrequent
occurrence. The most likely explanation is an adrenal gland
disorder. You might check for other symptoms, such as swollen vulva,
excessive grooming of others and thinning/flaking skin.
