Subject: Compounding Metranidazole

A few weeks ago, Dr. Williams posted a formula for
compounding Metranidazole (Flagyl) which he got
from a pharmacist friend. I haven't read that
anyone else has tried it so I guess we're the
first. Chester and Cedes are both on it for a
week, starting this p.m. First of all, it took 3
days for the pharmacist to get it to my vet.
Maybe the ingredients aren't readily available????

It's pink, like amoxi. I tasted it at the vet's
office. It tasted pretty good. In fact, it
tasted superb when I consider how flagyl usually
tastes. In about 5-10 minutes, I noticed that
familiar bitter, metalic taste but figured that
Cedes and Chester would be long-gone before the
yucky taste hit.

Gave each their first dose tonight. I can't say
it was a raging success but then most of them
aren't real fond of taking any meds. And, I did
just torture all of them this a.m. with their
heartworm meds. That was probably still fresh in
their memories <g>. I still can't believe that my
ferrets don't beg for amoxi. They tolerate it but
that's about it. Anyway, our first dose wasn't
real successful. In fact, I had to wipe quite a
bit off the floor afterward. I hope it will get
easier each time. I'll keep the List posted on
our success or failure.

The other thing that the pharmacist mentioned is
that it should be given on the front of the tongue
(sweet) rather than the back of the tongue
(bitter). I'm not sure how to do that since I
usually give syringed meds at the side of the
mouth.
