Subject: Re: Do islet tumors show on ultrasound?

I believe ultrasound for insulinoma is pretty much a waste of time
and money. As I understand it, the tumors can be very tiny, almost
microscopic, and dispersed throughout the pancreas. They're not even
visible when surgery is done and the pancreas is right there in front
of the surgeon, so it doesn't seem very likely an ultrasound would
show anything.

I believe this is also the reason why just removing visible
insulinomas on the surface of the pancreas often does not result in a
correction of low blood glucose and why the preferred method is to do
a partial pancreatectomy.
