Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] FLVET + OMEPRAZOLE
I know of a veterinary surgeon in Miami area -
AL LARIN - his brother is also a vet in the area
both excellent vets lots of exotics and surgery experience
and bilingual.
Thanks for the info on the renaming of prilozec. I was under the
impression that they had added a second compound to the drug
because the labeling was for upper GI (reflux esophagitis + ulcers )
disease rather
than for gastritis.
I would however disagree with the statement that little is know
about the
effects of this drug in animals. Compared to say, penicillin yes
much less
has been documented, however the parent company of Astra-Merk
(Swedish) funded a rather extensive study of omeprazole and
proton-pump inhibitors in horses
and the effects on gastic ulcers in race horses and fowls in the
early and late 1990's in the South eastern united states. Much of
this work then became propiortory information of the drug company
and was never released for public consumtion, although a paste
-dewormer type omeprazole was released and is marketed for use in
horses based upon this study. To this day there are some pony's in
the Southeast that have permanent tubes sticking out of their
stomachs so they can be used for other research studies, thanks to
American commercial investments and research. "regrettably"
ferrets, cats and dogs don't tolerate such devices and so there are
no research populations of these animals. But had they not all died
from complications associated with trying to maintain the tubes I'm
sure these animals would be drug company test subjects too.
