The use of The red lights is used when an animal is insensitive to IR
light. I know that even at the Pittsburgh Zoo they use red light in their
night cat display...wreaks havoc on auto focus cameras that use IR range
finders to focus.

After reading the article you sent I think that I am going to invest in a
few red lights for their room.
