Troy Lynn:

First, back off and regroup. A 48 hour post-mortem interval allows
post-mortem bacteria to overgrow - it can look like a bacterial
infection. did the tissues get sent off to the University?
Overwhelming bacterial infections yield significant changes in the
bloodwork - especially the CBC - if you haven't seen that to date,
then get cynical. While I can't tell you exactly what is going on,
bacterial infections which affect 5 individuals are pretty rare.
