Subject: Re: Prednisone and Prednisolone -- same thing? & General
insulinoma question
I'm not a vet or pharmacist but, for usage in a ferret with
insulinoma, prednisone and prednisolone accomplish the same goal.
I've used both with my ferrets with insulinoma. As I understand it,
prednisone is converted to prednisolone in the liver.
In liquid form, the difference between the two may be in the
concentration of the active ingredient. We typically get prednisone
in 5mg/5ml concentration while prednisolone (you'll probably get
Prelone syrup) is 15mg/5ml. So naturally the amount of liquid given
would have to be adjusted accordingly. Prelone has alcohol in it, but
at 5% and with the small amount given, it probably is not a concern.
The strangest part, to me, is that a number of pharmacies don't even
know what prednisone is!
