I recently did a Biaxin protocol for several of my ferrets. From what
I understand (I not a vet or a pharmacologist) the Biaxin comes
powdered & is mixed at time of dispensing. My local compounding
pharmacist mixed part of the bottle, as I obviously didn't need it
all and left the rest unmixed so that I could try other flavors of
Crystal Light if I couldn't get them to take the flavor he mixed. I
was only charged $84 for a 100ml (when mixed) bottle. Maybe I just
got a good deal.... but I had Biaxin granules left for subsequent use
if needed.
We (including vet in this 'we') determined, however, that the Biaxin
was too hard on the kidneys of one of the ferrets being treated. The
ferret, being treated for helicobacter, apparantly had a pre-existing
but undiagnosed kidney disfunction which very quickly became a
problem after a week on Biaxin. The ferret eventually died from renal
failure, and we suspect the Biaxin was a factor. We test kidney
function now before prescribing Biaxin protocols.
