Subject: Ileus/Gastrointestinal Stasis in ferrets?

Hello !

A friend of mine had a bunny die of what was diagnosed
as Pneumonia coupled with a massive hairball, but what
it may have been is described in the following
paragraph:

"Rather, the stress of his pneumonia caused a
condition
known as ileus, which is often misdiagnosed as a
"hairball" because ileus results in an impaction of
food in the stomach and intestines.
Ileus is the complete stoppage of peristalsis: no
food leaves the gut, the rabbit becomes inappetent and
lethargic, and only very aggressive
measures--including hydration of the intestinal
contents with oral fluids and intestinal motility
drugs--will reverse this if
it is allowed to progress."

Can this condition occur in ferrets? An article that
was attached to this message mentioned that using
hairball meds actually makes this condition worse as
it does not allow fluids to enter the mass and break
it up.

Thank you,

Mary
