Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Brutus/diabetes/insulin resistance

Candice (and anybody else with a diabetic fert or suggestions on what I
should do):

After two months of ever increasing insulin, this morning Sundance's sugar
barely registered on the glucose stick - checked twice to make sure it wasn't
a bad stick. Now, I don't know what do to - other than get him to the vet, I
hope tonight.

Quick recap - Sundance has been ill for about 9 months, 9 months ago he was
fat, wobbly, and had sugar of 178, although symptoms of insuloma. At vet
direction, put him on lo-cal "Mature Ferret" foods, etc., six months later he
suddenly dropped weight, drinking lots. Vet for a week after blood glucose
said 590, never quite got sugar down below 250, and he started losing hair.
Brought him home, hair lose continues, most of head and neck is bald. Strong
musk scent to urine, classic diabetes symptons (drinking lots, peeing lots).
On Insulin, gained weight, eventually saw a slow down in consuming water
(although still drinks more then my healthy guys). Continued with insulin,
upping in .5 increments until this morning (topped out at 4.0) when insulin
probably would have killed him. No adrenal surgery planned, as he is just
not healthy enough for it. No ferret spark left in this sick little boy, and
I really don't know what to do. No quality of life, just eats, poops and
sleeps. Doesn't want to play with the others, doesn't want to come out other
then maybe for petting, no interest in anything. He's a MF rescue aged
somewhere between 5 - 6 (we think) Vet feels a "nodule" or "mass" in his
stomach - not pancreas, might be the adrenal (although reading here and
experience with another ferret, you can't palpate adrenal tumors), might be
lymphoma.
Any ideas at all?

Thanks Cay
