Subject: Re: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: Photoperiods and Adrenals

You are bringing up a really interesting subject. There is a
researcher I know who is studying the impact of adrenal glands ( and
therefore also stress hormones) and photoperiod on coat growth on
mink. It is getting far more involved as time goes on, but it turns
out that there are the same stress hormones produced in the adrenals
also produced at the hair follicles. It does appear to be a complex
relationship with photoperiod. They are interested in stress, but I am
interested in it because it may shed light on ferret adrenal problems.
Keep me posted how things progress with them with these changes. Mine
are free range, and keep their own schedules as well as having access
to "burrows". Food is ad lib, though. They would naturally cache food
and munch at will. I don't know if I would restrict frequency of
feeding.
