Subject: Questions on Melatonin usage
I've been scouring the archives trying to get info about using
Melatonin on an adrenal ferret, but I think I'm just getting
confused. I'm hoping it'll get straightened out in my mind if I ask
my questions in one place.
Background: Chumley had both adrenals out (at least, aboout 85% of
the right) approx. 1 1/2 years ago. He's started showing symptoms
again - he's lost all fur on the upper half of his body, and is
sparse on the lower half. Sexually agressive with his 2 female cage
mates. He was on Arimidex for about 3 months, but didn't seem to be
responding. Got his first shot of 1-month Lupron about 2 weeks ago.
Ironically, since coming off of the Arimidex, his skin has gotten
drier and he's lost more hair. Our vet said it might take a few
doses for the Lupron to really show results. So, I'm wondering if
the Melatonin might help in the meantime. So my questions are:
1) Is it safe to give Melatonin to a ferret on Lupron?
2) What would the dosage be?
3) Where can I obtain Melatonin? I saw some in gelcap form in
Walgreens the other day, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing.
4) Anything else I should know about Melatonin?
Also, if anyone has any recommendations for relieving the itchiness,
I'd appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks -
Cynthia
