Subject: Are these symptoms of insulinoma?
Hi,
My ferret, Sofie is an approx. 2,5 years old neutured
jill. She came to me when she was 7 months and has
been a healthy ferret all the time. The only times
I've went to the vet was to get her vaccine + curing
ear mite. I also have another ferret, a young male
(approx. 5 months old).
A few days ago I noticed Sofie had trouble walking.
She was dragging her hind legs after her, like she had
no control over them. She did not act like she was in
pain, she just dragged her way over to the feeding
place and started eating. I examined her by carefully
pulling her right hind leg (it was the leg that had
most trouble), and squeezing it a little. I also
checked her for marks, wounds etc. and checked her
spine and other legs. She didn't react once - just
kept on eating like nothing was wrong.
The next day she was a little better, but still her
right leg just hung there, although I could see she
tried to use it. So I went to the vet.
The vet examined her legs, back, temperature etc etc.
She also checked to see if she could feel anything at
all, by pinching Sofie a little. She did not like
that!
The vet was not sure, but told me to get Sofie some
antibiotics and then come back in two days if I didn't
see any bettering.
It has been two days now, Sofie is better - she can
walk and almost run, but she is limping. I also notice
that her tail is a bit strange. It seems to be
pointing to the right (same side as her bad leg).
I've posted on several ferret-boards and several told
me that the leg-thing may be a sympton of insulinoma.
I've read a bit about it, but I don't understand how
this could be... since she shows no other signs of
illness, she eats, go to the "toilet" and is as she
usually is. Her fur is soft and nice, no sign of
hair-loss or anything.
I would really like to get a veterinarian's point of
view on this, since these posts made me a bit nervous.
Regards,
Bente A., Norway
