I have since exchanged a few messages with the guy that traps the
ferrets. He kept one frozen and he plans to take it to his vet for a
necropsy. Unfortunately, freezing will prevent anything other than a
gross examination. I mentioned this and he agreed to take him
a "fresh" ferret after this one is examined and even a live one if
there is any advantage to that.

Who knows. The vet may look at the first one and say this is mange
and that'll be the end of that. I'll post more when I hear what the
necropsy turns up.
