Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Sarcoptic and/or Demodex mites

Hi Lynn!!!
I have no idea whether the different mites look similar
anyways, or what they even look like period (sadly prefer to
be ignorant on this one).
But, I know at least Cokie has the demodex kind of mange.
(Her only symptom that I can tell is a slight discoloration of
her nose--but the vet tested it and it was demodex). There is
another ferret I know that has the same thing. From what I
understand it is uncommon in ferrets, but more common in
ferrets who have a compromised immune system (i.e. long term
prednisone treatment). Also from what I understand (read:
correct me if I'm wrong!), the demodex mites live on a certain
percentage of animals (i.e. more common in dogs, less in
ferrets), as part of their "normal fauna" (*grin*), but when
there is an illness or problems with the immune system, they
multiply and become problematic. I don't really understand
why the d. mites aren't contagious...

Nice to hear you out there!!
Celia

Do ferrets get sarcoptic mange/mites? And/or Demodex mites?
I saw a
picture on the web of a sarcoptic mite that looked exactly
what I have
found in my ferrets' ears, upon microscoptic examination. I
did a
search of the FHL past posts and could not find an answer.
I
certainly know about ear mites in ferrets! I just don't
know if
ferrets get skin mites and, if so, what kind.
Thanks!
Lynn McIntosh,
