Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Re: Second Try

I have had SPECT scans which are a type of PET scan. I had
them done in Columbia Presbyterian in NYC, but they are
available in most large hospitals I believe.

They showed the perfusion and functioning (or not, in my
case<g>), for different parts of the brain. Each type of
CNS disease or injury causes the brain to function
differently; so the pattern you see in (for instance)
Depression vs. Multiple Sclerosis vs. a stroke vs. Lyme
Disease all translate into different patterns of
functioning in the brain. And they all look different than
a normal brain.

It's not a painful or difficult test, but it does take a
while, during which you need to be still. I fell asleep. I
doubt we'd get that lucky with a fuzzball.

As far as where they would have one, I would guess the
large vet schools, especially in conjunction with a med
school. For instance, I would think the University of
Pennsylvania and Cornell might have them available, though
I have no personal knowledge.
