Subject: Thyroid Dose
My overweight girl, Sabrina, was speyed yesterday in an
attempt to halt her weight gain which was continuing at an
alarming rate despite her being on a strict diet. Her surgeon
said the fat has started to fold back on itself, her liver was
showing changes and it was difficult to view all of her other
organs because of the fat, but he did his best. Also, he
could not get enough blood for another T4 test. Despite that,
she is to commence thyroid therapy in an effort to decrease
the fat deposits because the situation is urgent. The
smallest dose available is Oroxine, 200 microgram tablets. My
vet has had no experience with giving ferrets thyroid
treatment and his dosage advice is, at best, a guess. His
idea is to give 1/8th tablet once per week starting tonight.
He suggested I contact you to see if anyone knows of a better
dosage regime. Has anybody out there successfully treated a
ferret with a thyroid replacement?
Meanwhile, Sabrina is at home, recovering well from her
operation. The ability of these little ones to bounce back
from surgery never fails to astound me.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Shirley
