Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Thyroid medicine and dosage!

At what point would you suspect hypothyroidism as opposed to
chubbiness? I have a fat one and always wondered if I should
do something about her weight.

Having had 2 ferrets with hypothyroidism, I can tell
you of the medication and the dosage used for the last
one named Jake! He was a 'blimp' and had terrible
trouble with allergies and would break out in horrible
sores and the bridge of his nose, paws and ears would
swell making him look like 'Dumbo'!
His T4 tests proved his low thyroid and after starting
him on his medication, he not only lost weight but all
his other problems disappeared also!
THYROXINE was the med. recommended 0.5mg---dissolve in
10ml water/diluent. THIS WOULD HAVE TO BE DISCARDED
AFTER A WEEK and START WITH FRESH AGAIN! We started
with .25ml P.O.-B.I.D. AND WENT AS HIGH AS .6ml. You
would have to determine the amount by the T4 RESULTS
AND THE WEIGHT LOSS!
Hope this helps, if your vet needs more info. then
email me privately and I will get him intouch with my
2 previous vets!
