necessary?
Erin, Katherine & readers--
I would like to ask what? on distemper titers they DO know - I know
a shelter vet DR XXX in TX who sent blood out in a distemper case
and they can identify titers from vaccination exposure, post
exposure to live virus, etc. If this cannot be identified - then I
would like to know how they can rate exposure from the titer tests .
IS this not how the vaccine trials utilize the efficacy ratings?
Certainly this is done and recognized for rabies vaccination
coverage -- that is how they measured vaccine coverage for 3 year
ratings on cats & dogs... I take a few issues with the previous
arguments.
but then I am only a shelter worker...

I agree with the previous posts to continue vaccinating. I think
it's the safest route.
I wanted to share some additional information though. I had asked
this question at the AFA's AVMA Ferret Symposium in Boston this
past
July: In the case of a ferret that reacts to the distemper
vaccination, can we measure the titer level to know whether or not
to
re-vaccinate that ferret? The answer I received from the panel of
very knowledgeable ferret vets is that the "safe" titer level is
not
known therefore we have nothing with which to compare our ferret's
measured titer level. Until research is done to determine the
titer
level that we are looking for, we can't accurately assess whether
or
not our ferret's titer level is too low or if it is considered
"safe."
Just some more info to think about, I suppose.
Sincerely,
Erin
