Subject: Re: Are annual vaccinations still necessary?
How could you vaccinate against a disease if you didn't know the
proper levels of protection that should be in the system? That
doesn't make sense to me.
Perhaps what is really being said is that the extreme highs and lows
(range) have not been fully estabished for ferrets. That doesn't
mean, to me, that a titer check would not be useful. I'm sure there
are some safe parameters for protection. It may be that, in
actuality, the levels could be higher or lower but that isn't yet
established.
I have no intentions of discontinuing distemper vaccinations. It is
too easy to be exposed. Even though we have never seen severe
reactions (thank God), I have asked my vet to get the new Merial
vaccine for our next round. If I have one who can't be vaccinated, it
won't matter what their titer level is. In fact, when I was looking
into it for Lily it wasn't because I was going to make a decision
about her vaccination. She wasn't getting one at all because it would
be ineffective. My reason for checking her titer was to find out
whether it would be safe to bring potential carriers into my home.
In the meantime, I refused any animals who could be carriers.
If anyone is really interested, they should contact United Vaccines,
the maker of Fervac-D...is that right?
