The procedure recommended in the Rabies Compendium for a bite by a

healthy appearing ferret is to quarentine the ferret for 10 days
and
watch him. If he doesn't get sick in the 10 days, he was not
sheding
rabies virus at the time of the bite. The actual procedure that is

followed is a matter of local and state law and like you, I
recommend
vaccination annually.

In most cases the quarantine is only allowed if the animal is
adequately vaccinated. Otherwise, the person bitten can still
insist on having the animal killed and tested.
