Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] Corneal ulcers?
Corneal ulcers/scratches can be caused from rough housing with other
ferrets, dust, foreign bodies/debris and other direct trauma. If not treated
right yes, a ferret can lose it's eye sight.
Signs to look for are squinting, eye discharge(green/yellow) even the ferret
pawing at his/her eye(sign that it's uncomfortable). To test for the corneal
ulcer the vet uses a fluorescein dye. The ulcer will take up the orange
stain and it will appear green under light. Treatment is usually an
antibiotic (making sure that it's non-steroidal)and sometimes an atropine
eye solution is used to keep the eye dilated to help with the discomfort. It
also help prevent adhesions from forming. My dog had a deep ulcer in his eye
and the vet actually sutured the lower and upper eyelids together with a
button to let the conjunctiva help heal the ulcer. It worked great and
healed very fast. I hope this can help! KM
