Subject: Mystery illness with high fever

Hi guys,

Sarah, who is about 1 1/2 years old has had a high fever for 10 days
now. We had taken her to the ER last Wed. night when she was very
weak and listless. Her temp was 106. Xrays and blood work were
done, as well as a fecal test. Her xray showed some congestion in
her lungs, which was suspected as possible pneumonia. She also had
high bacteria in her stool and diarrhea. Her bloodwork was
unremarkable except for borderline low levels of her white cells and
her red cells. She spent the night at the ER on IV fluids and
antibiotics and was transferred to my regular vet the next day, where
the kept her until the following evening with the same treatment. My
vet agreed with the ER vet's diagnosis of intestinal bacterial
infection and possible pneumonia.

Since she's been home, I've been treating her with Baytril and Amoxi
drops. Her diarrhea has since cleared up, but after the first few
days she stopped eating her regular diet (TF) and is now eating only
chicken gravy by syringe and off my finger. She takes this readily,
however won't eat it off the plate. The xrays and bloodwork were
repeated on Tuesday, and there was no significant changes. Her fever
responds to the anti-inflammatory meds that have been given by
injection, however as soon as the meds wear off, the fever shoots
back up. Her energy level has improved somewhat, meaning that she
can walk around the room and has shown a little interest in her
surroundings whereas she initially would only attempt to drag herself
around and she was not interested in anything.

Does anyone have any other ideas on what we may be dealing with here,
or any other ideas for treatment. Sarah and I thank you for any help
you can give us.

Peaceful wishes, Lucie
