I have to agree with Alicia that many petstores and distributors
do NOT provide medical care to returned ferrets not matter what
the source.
It usually is best to first get to the vet for any needed care, then
contact the breeder with a note written by your vet on hospital
letterhead. There are folks who have reimbursement from a
number of farms and breeders, though some do not provide any.
If the store provided warranty information you will have the
address you need. If the store did not then badger them for the
breeder's info and for copies of any papers you should have
received.
Meanwhile, do keep the ferret isolated, follow the tips folks gave
here, wash well before handling any other ferrets you have, get
stool samples to the vet, get examination, don't associate with
anyone else's critters till you are sure it's not ECE, a parasite, or
something else that calls for that sort of care.
If it has blue ear dots and a toe dot (though those toe ones can
be hard to find) those are Marshalls markings and you'll have
been given papers if so, if it has a pink ear dot that is Triple F
marking, if it has no tattoo but PV papers that is Path Valley, if it
has an "H" that is Hagan, etc. Have heard of someone with a
ferret that came with a line (defintely not dots and sounds like it's
not a compressed "H", either, but don't know who tats in a line,
so if anyone does know, please write me privately).
While you are at it, you'll want to get your schedule for
vaccinations for the ferret once this is brought under control; a
general check-up for a kit makes sense, anyway. If you don't
have a ferret vet then you can go to the Files section at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ferret-Health-list and look in both
the recommended vets list and the shelter list to find an
assortment. You'll find more listed at http://www.miamiferret.org,
and in links at http://www.ferretcentral.org, and elsewhere.
