Subject: [Ferret-Health-list] healthy diet with less waste
Being new to this group I can only offer this to you:
Please do change his food. There isn't enough protein in it
for him. Ferrets need at least 36% protein and 20% fat in
their diet.
When changing foods do it very slowly as well, over a 7-10
period. See if you can't locate one of the following foods for
him: Totally Ferret, Marshall's or Mazuri. Make sure he has a
constant supply of food and water as ferrets digest their food
very quickly (in about 3 hours after eating).
You might want to consider backing off the treats a little bit
as well. Try Cheerios or Kix cereal instead. The more they
eat, the more they will poop, kind of like a baby bird LOL:o)
I am not sure what to tell you about the pot belly, but there
are a lot of other people/vets on the list that will offer
suggestion to you, it could be diet related or something that
I am completely unfamiliar with.
TTFN,
Heather & Remmington

I just got a new 9 week old neutered male ferret. He seems
very
healthy, and is an enthuiastic eater. I am feeding him
Kaytee's
Forti-diet, as this is what he was eatting at the store I
purchased
him at. He has definately developed a pot belly in the week
we have
had him. Through focused attention and rewards he is also
finally
kitty liter trained in his cage.
My question is, he seems to have bowel movements much more
often than
my previous ferrets. Even when we wake him, let him use the
litter
pan, reward him for a job well done and then let him out to
play, he
seems to need to go again with in a few minutes. Also, we
need to
change the corner litter pan after less than a day of use.
I wondered
if you all had a opinion on a more digestible food I might
try that
would help me. (to put a finer point on this, it's not
consistancy
but mass!!!)
I have enjoyed reading your notes to each other in the past
weeks as I
anticipated Reilly's arrival, and would like to compliment
you all on
a nuturing and enthusiastic forum.
Thanks
Carol
