Elaine, I would put ranks going in opposite directions from each
hole to make sure they didn't fall from the top level to the bottom.
Or you could use the chicken wire, cover with carpeting to make
stairs and again cushion any falls.

I would try using linolium(sp), which is easy to clean and doesn't
hold ordors like wood and fabric does.
