I'd check Desuba for possible adrenal neoplasia: the marked orange oil, smell, and agressiveness all sound like that. Has his fur gotten at all thin. If so, that would be another signal, too. Male ferrets with adrenal neoplasia can develop prostate inflammation and urinary blockage so watch him carefully in this regard.

While abuse certainly can cause agressive behavior, adrenal neoplasia is another possible cause so I'd also consider that his friend may have that problem.
