The problem with a waterpik is that with a painful oral lesion, even the gentlest setting can be like a knife.

Here's a good story for you - when I took my first physical for the Army, I had an older physician administer it. He could not see one of my eardrums completely, so he used a waterpik to flush out the ear canal. When that burst of water hit my eardrum, I nearly jumped through the ceiling!
