I wouldn't pull the string out, what I would do is pick up on the Laxatone, (hairball remedy). My Nikki Taur used to have a habit of chewing on his receiving blankets, (I would see bits and pieces of the corner chewed), and sure enouch in his poop, I would see blanket!! What I did was beef up a little on the hairball remedy and it worked like a charm.
Keep a close eye on eating and of course poops, just in case a vet visit is in order :)
