BI=two LATERAL=side BILATERAL=both sides. Many ferrets have both
adrenals removed. They are refered to as bilateral.

If a ferret has a complete bilateral adrenal operation it leaves then
without some necessary hormones that regulate the amounts of sodium and
potassium in their blood. This condition is called Addison"s Disease. If
your ferret has Addison's, it will need to take hormones for the rest of
it's life.
