Subject: Should you wean from Pediapred before surgery?

Duke, my 5 year old male, was scheduled for adrenal surgery, but in doing his bloodwork, we found his bg was 40. I knew he wasn't feeling well, but I hadn't picked up on any hypoglycemic cues. I was more concerned that it was due to his other adrenal, since his left was somewhat enlarged when we took the right side out (which was pea-sized and lab results stated it was a carcinoma). He had a rough recovery, even then (15 months ago). Anyway...

Surgery was cancelled, and Duke was started on 1.0 ml dose of Pediapred twice a day in Chicken Gravy. I can't really say he is acting much different, even with being on the pred. He's been on it for about 10 days, now.

I need to have Duke's surgery done, but my vet feels he should be weaned off of the pred first. If his bg is that low, I wouldn't want him to crash without the pred, even if he isn't dancing while he is on it.

So, my (our)question is, do you really even need to wean them off of the pediapred before surgery, and if so, how do you go about doing it without the ferret crashing. My vet asked me to see what I could find out...

Nothing I found in the archives addressed or recommended weaning them before surgery.

Thanks,
Julie and Duke (Mom, if I keep laying in the litterbox will you keep giving me more of Bob's Chicken Gravy?)
