Have you thought of using personal scent (as in a safe perfume that ferrets like)?
There are two possible takes on this, and each one has succeeded with different individual situations, so observe and consider first.
1. If you think that he is being made more insecure, then adding a safe scent to his neck and lower back will add to his security and he won't need to be as aggressive because stink is status and his smell alone shoudl wrok for him
2. If you think that he doesn't know know his own strength then putting scent on her neck and lower back might give him pause because she will have gained status.
