Subject: Ketones in Urine

Need help with Zeke, whom has developed high blood glucose (blood 593) and ketones in his urine. He started on Insulin last Friday, but I just don't see the ketones going down very fast. (Glucose has been dropping slowly) Will the glucose drop faster than the ketones on a Multistix? (Will send insulin doses, if that would be helpful.)

I'm giving fluids (about 75 to 100 mls daily). (needs more?)

He has stopped eating on his own, smells 'chemical', and is very weak.

How long can he have ketones in his system and expect to survive this? How long does it usually take to get a diabetic ferret stabilized?

Age: about 5 yrs, male, ADV (-), cataracts/appears blind
Normal weight: around 3 pounds
Typically drank and urinated a lot (I suspected kidneys)
Ear infections twice since intake in March
Left adrenalectomy in July; Nothing removed from pancreas
Not presumed to be pred related since I only had him on a 0.3 ml dose for one week until he could have bloodwork done to check kidney values and bg -thought it might be LOW due to lethargy!

(Zeke had another brief coarse of pred in July, during which he was active and felt good. He was on it twice a day for 3 days, then once a day for 3 days then every other day for 3 doses. He was feeling pretty good during that time.)

Any help will be appreciated.
Julie
