Okay, I am going to just mention some human esophagus stuff here in case it might help. Steve has a congenital constriction on his espohagus inherited from his dad who also has one. Both have had trouble with esophaeal bolluses. One time at a restaurant someone wanted to heimlich Steve's dad which would have been bad since the material could have moved to his trachea and he could have lost airway.

It is obvious that this sort of back-up for them is very painful, and if it continues too long the neighboring structures, especially the trachea can be impinged and can even swell, endangering airway, and dehydration can also occur due to the inability to swallow even one's own saliva. When Steve required a surgical correction for one he also needed IV to replace fluids lost and he also needed something to reduce tracheal inflammation as well as esophageal.
