Ah, this has been clarified a bit off list.

The abdominal fluid amounts that cause worry are often large ones, with a difference in outward appearance seen and sometimes mistaken for fat. They actually are rather like a water balloon once they are big enough and will even often do a bit of sloshing if patted while the ferret is on his or her back. A tiny amount could have a less worrisome cause.

Yes, coughing can be from intubation just as the treating vet said, or from infection (Is the ferret on broad spectrum antibiotics post-surgically?), or one of the other things mentioned, but if the ferret has had past allergies those may alternatively be implicated since many areas are having a bad rag weed seasaon recently. Thank goodness for hepa filter aircleaners.
