Dear Lucy:

#1) Yes, 3 times a day is fine. 2 is probably ok as well, provided they eat as much as they want.

#2) For a normal healthy young ferret, it is certainly not my first choice, as it is not formulated for oral health. However, for 7 year olds with other health problems, especially GI disease, and you are grinding up ferret food in it to get them some of the trace minerals and taurine, they should do very well on it. I would prefer ferrets not be fat, but at 7, you take fat and healthy over skinny and unhealthy any day.

#3) Don't know how to recapitulate Gerber's formula, and they're probably not telling.

Oh, did I tell you that baby food is addictive? I guess it's a bit late for that. I've got an addict in my house too - but he suffers from eosinophilic enteritis, is on pred every day as well, and I'm happy to have him still around.

Migration away from this diet is possible, but with 7-year olds, let's not push it too hard -

With kindest regards,

Bruce Williams, dVM
