I do not know what vets there are there - but I had the same problems here in Minnesota and found one in a very close city-15 minutes away. Most places who really care about the pets will allow you to make a partial payment now and post date a check for the balance in a month. For costly surgery, they may even make up a payment plan.
Go with your instincts and insist it be checked further - but with a vet who cares enough to work something out- not just for you but for your little sweetheart. I will send my own prayers and positive energies your way in hopes you will find good caring people to help. If you lived closer, I would drive you. Sorry I cant!
