Three shots are only required, I believe, when the shots are started at 8 weeks of age. The idea is that you want the last shot in the initial set to be given after the kit is 14 or 15 weeks old.
In the past, I have taken in rescues where the vaccinations were either not given, or the history was unknown. My vet always recommended 2 shots given 3 weeks apart.
Also, when I was breeding ferrets, because I allowed my kits to nurse until the mother weaned them, I generally started the shots later, giving the first sometimes as late as 12 weeks. In that case, I only gave 2 shots, since the second came at week 15. This was with my vet's recommendation.
So, if you gave the ferret 2 shots and he was 4 or 5 months old, that should be sufficient, if my vet is correct.
